BMW timing chain specialists in Manchester
Timing systems are all we do. That means when a BMW arrives with a rattle or a timing fault, we're not fitting parts on a hunch — we're comparing what the engine is telling us against how that particular engine family behaves.
Timing chain faults matter because the chain keeps the crankshaft and camshafts in exact relation to each other. If a chain jumps a tooth, or a worn guide breaks up and jams the drive, valves and pistons can meet, and the repair moves from a chain job to internal engine damage. That's why noises and timing codes should be diagnosed rather than left to see whether they get worse.
We're a Manchester workshop, and BMW timing chain repair is one of the most common jobs we take on alongside conventional timing belt replacement and modern wet belt replacement.
BMW engines we work on
BMW timing chains are not all the same. Layout, chain position, symptoms, failure pattern and repair procedure vary between engine families, so it's wrong to assume every BMW suffers the same fault. These are the families we see most:
- N47 (2.0 diesel) — Found in many 1, 3 and 5 Series models. Best known of the BMW timing chain concerns, with the chain driven from the rear of the engine.
- N57 (3.0 diesel) — Six-cylinder diesel used across 3, 5, 7 and X models. Shares the rear chain layout, with its own wear characteristics and repair procedure.
- B47 (2.0 diesel) — The later modular diesel that replaced the N47. Revised chain design, but chain, tensioner and guide wear still needs checking when noise appears.
- B57 (3.0 diesel) — Modular six-cylinder diesel. Different components and tolerances again, so diagnosis is carried out to that engine's specification.
- N20 / N26 (2.0 petrol) — Turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engines with a front-mounted chain. Tensioner and guide wear is the usual complaint here rather than the diesel pattern.
If your BMW isn't listed, send us the registration. We'll identify the engine code and tell you honestly whether it's a job we'd take on.
Common BMW timing chain symptoms
- Rattling or metallic chatter from the engine
- Noise that is worst for the first few seconds after a cold start
- Timing-related fault codes and timing correlation faults
- Engine management light on the dashboard
- Rough idle, misfiring or hesitation
- Difficult or extended starting
- Noticeable loss of performance or economy
None of these symptoms prove on their own that the chain has failed. A cold-start rattle can come from a tensioner, a vanos unit or oil pressure issues, and timing correlation codes can be caused by sensors or variable valve timing components as well as chain wear. We measure and inspect before we quote — see our engine timing diagnostics in Manchester.
BMW N47 timing chain problems
The N47 2.0 diesel is the engine most owners have already read about before they call us. It has a recognised timing chain concern, and the reason it has such a reputation is as much about access as it is about the chain itself.
Why the N47 is a bigger job
On the N47 the chain is driven from the rear of the engine, at the gearbox end. Reaching it requires substantially more dismantling than a conventional front-mounted timing system, which is why the labour content is higher than many owners expect.
What we look at
We assess the noise, review fault code history and live timing data, and check oil condition and service history. Plenty of N47s run for high mileages without trouble — regular oil changes with the correct specification oil make a real difference — so the purpose of the inspection is to establish the actual condition of your engine rather than to assume the worst case.
Acting early
If a rattle is picked up while the chain is still driving correctly, the work is a planned repair. Left long enough, the same fault can turn into an engine rebuild. There's no need to panic — but there is a good reason not to wait.
Our BMW timing chain replacement process
- Diagnosis. Cold-start assessment, fault code history, live timing data and oil condition, so we know what we're dealing with before anything comes apart.
- Inspection and quotation. We confirm the engine code and the scope of work, then give you a clear price. The parts needed depend on your engine specification and what the inspection shows — we won't promise an identical parts list for every BMW.
- Dismantling as required. Access varies enormously between engines. On a rear-chain diesel that means significant strip-down; on a front-chain petrol it is far less involved.
- Timing chain system replacement. Chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets renewed where inspection shows they're needed, using components suited to your engine.
- Correct timing setup. Timing set and verified to BMW's published procedure, using the appropriate locking and alignment method for that engine.
- Fluids and related components. Seals, gaskets, oil and filter renewed as the repair requires.
- Testing. Codes cleared, live timing data re-checked and a road test before the car is handed back.
Why choose Manchester Timing Belt Specialist
- Timing systems are our specialism — belts, chains and wet belts, not general repairs.
- Engine-specific diagnosis — we work from the engine code and live data rather than a generic checklist.
- Professional procedures — timing set and verified to the manufacturer's published method.
- Manchester workshop — Unit 2, Lancaster Works, Kingsbridge Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester, M9 5SP.
- Clear communication — you'll know the findings and the price before we start the repair.

How much does BMW timing chain replacement cost in Manchester?
BMW timing chain replacement starts from £995. The exact price varies by BMW model, engine code, where the chain sits on the engine, the damage found during inspection and the parts required. A rear-mounted diesel chain takes far more labour than a front-mounted petrol one, and some engines need extra components once the covers are off. Send us your registration, model and mileage and we'll give you an accurate quotation before any work starts.
What are the symptoms of a BMW timing chain problem?
The most common signs are a rattle or metallic chatter from the engine — often loudest for the first few seconds after a cold start — along with timing-related fault codes, an engine management light, rough running, difficult starting or a loss of performance. These symptoms can have other causes, so they need diagnosis before anyone condemns the chain.
Does the BMW N47 have timing chain problems?
The N47 diesel has a well-known timing chain concern, and it is the BMW engine we are asked about most. Not every N47 develops a fault, and the risk depends on service history, oil condition and mileage, so the right approach is an inspection rather than assuming the worst.
Can I drive my BMW with a rattling timing chain?
We'd advise against continuing to drive it. A rattle can indicate chain, tensioner or guide wear, and if the chain jumps or a guide breaks up the engine can suffer serious internal damage. Get it inspected promptly — early diagnosis usually means a smaller repair.
How long does BMW timing chain replacement take?
It depends entirely on the engine. Some petrol engines with front-mounted chains are a one to two day job. Rear-mounted diesel chains, such as those on the N47, need much more dismantling and typically take several days. We confirm the expected timescale with your quotation.
Do you replace BMW N47 timing chains?
Yes. N47 timing chain work is something we carry out regularly, including the additional dismantling the rear chain location requires. We inspect first so you know exactly what your engine needs before committing to the repair.
Do you work on BMW petrol and diesel timing chains?
Yes. We work on BMW diesel families such as the N47, N57, B47 and B57, and petrol engines including the N20 and N26. Each family has its own layout and failure pattern, so we diagnose by engine code rather than applying a single assumption to every BMW.
