Renault & Dacia timing chains
Renault & Dacia Timing Chain Replacement Manchester
Specialist Renault and Dacia timing chain diagnosis and replacement in Manchester, covering the TCe petrol chain range across Clio, Captur, Kadjar, Megane, Duster and Sandero. We confirm your exact engine code before any repair is discussed — including telling you plainly when your car is actually belt-driven.
Renault & Dacia timing chain specialists in Manchester
Renault and Dacia share the same TCe petrol engine family and the same 1.5 dCi diesel across much of their range, sold under both badges and across several model names. That makes it easy to assume a car is one thing when it's actually another, which is why we confirm the engine code from your registration before we say anything about the repair.
The most important distinction we make on this page is between the TCe petrol chain engines and the 1.5 dCi diesel, which is belt-driven. If your car turns out to be a dCi, we'll tell you honestly and point you to timing belt replacement rather than sell you a chain inspection you don't need.
Renault & Dacia engines we work on
Confirm your engine by registration rather than assuming from the model badge alone — the same nameplate can be sold with a chain-driven TCe petrol or a belt-driven dCi diesel.
- 0.9 TCe (H4Bt, petrol, chain) — Fitted to Clio, Captur and Sandero. Front-mounted timing chain with a tensioner and guides that can wear, especially where oil changes have been stretched beyond the recommended interval.
- 1.2 TCe (H5Ft and related, petrol, chain) — Used across Clio, Captur, Megane and Kadjar. Has a recognised tensioner and chain stretch concern, showing up as a cold-start rattle and, in some cases, a timing fault code.
- 1.3 TCe (petrol, chain) — The newer, larger-displacement TCe unit fitted to Megane, Kadjar and Captur variants. Chain-driven like its smaller siblings, with tensioner and guide wear the usual cause of noise complaints.
- 1.5 dCi (K9K, diesel, belt — not chain) — Important distinction: the 1.5 dCi diesel fitted across most of the same model range is belt-driven, not chain-driven. If your car has this engine, it needs timing belt replacement on schedule, not chain work — see our timing belt replacement page for details.
If you're not sure which system your car has, send us the registration and we'll check it against the engine code before recommending anything.
Common TCe timing chain symptoms
- Rattle or metallic chatter on cold start, easing once warm
- Rattle that persists once the engine is fully warm
- Timing correlation fault codes
- Engine management light on the dashboard
- Rough idle, hesitation or a flat spot under load
- Knocking noise from the front of the engine
- Poor starting or extended cranking before the engine catches
A cold-start rattle on a 0.9 or 1.2 TCe is often dismissed as normal three-cylinder engine noise, but persistent chatter, especially alongside a timing fault code, is worth checking properly. Our timing diagnostics service measures cam-to-crank correlation rather than guessing from noise alone, and our timing chain rattle diagnosis page explains how we approach a rattle before anyone quotes a chain kit.
The 1.5 dCi is belt-driven, not chain-driven
It's a common point of confusion because the 1.5 dCi (K9K) diesel is fitted across nearly the same model range as the TCe petrol engines — Clio, Captur, Kadjar and Duster all offered both. If your car is a dCi, it does not have a timing chain at all, and the relevant maintenance is timing belt replacement on the manufacturer's interval, not chain diagnosis. Missing that belt interval on a dCi carries the same risk as any neglected timing belt, so it's worth checking your service history if you're not certain which engine you have.
Our Renault & Dacia timing chain replacement process
- Diagnosis. Cold-start assessment, fault code history, live timing data and oil condition, so we know what we're dealing with before anything comes apart.
- Confirm the engine and drive type. We verify the exact engine code against your registration, since the same model name can hide different timing systems.
- Fixed quotation. Scope of work and price confirmed before we start.
- Chain, tensioner and guide replacement. Renewed to the manufacturer's specification, with sprockets replaced where wear or damage is found.
- Correct timing setup. Set and verified using the manufacturer's locking and alignment procedure for that engine.
- Testing. Fault codes cleared, timing data re-checked and a road test before handover.
Why choose Manchester Timing Belt Specialist
- Timing systems are our specialism — belts, chains and wet belts, not general repairs.
- Engine-specific diagnosis — we identify the engine code and drive type before quoting, rather than assuming from the model badge.
- Honest advice — if your car is belt-driven, not chain-driven, we'll say so rather than sell you the wrong job.
- Manchester workshop — Unit 2, Lancaster Works, Kingsbridge Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester, M9 5SP.
- Clear communication — you'll know the findings and the price before we start the repair.
- Warranty available — subject to the repair carried out and our terms.

Does my Renault or Dacia have a timing chain or a timing belt?
It depends entirely on the engine. The TCe petrol engines (0.9, 1.2 and 1.3 TCe) are chain-driven, while the 1.5 dCi diesel — fitted across most of the same model range — is belt-driven, not chain-driven. Confirm the engine code against your registration before assuming either way, since the same model badge can be sold with either engine.
How much does Renault/Dacia timing chain replacement cost in Manchester?
It depends on the engine, the condition found on inspection and whether tensioner, guides or sprockets also need replacing. Send your registration, model and mileage and we'll inspect the chain and give you a fixed price before any work begins.
What are the symptoms of a TCe timing chain problem?
A rattle or chatter from the front of the engine, most noticeable on cold start, along with timing correlation fault codes, an engine management light, rough idle or hesitation. On the smaller 0.9 and 1.2 TCe units, chain noise can be mistaken for general three-cylinder engine character, so it's worth having checked rather than dismissed.
Is the 1.2 TCe timing chain a known problem?
The 1.2 TCe (H5Ft and related codes) has a recognised tensioner and chain stretch concern, particularly where oil changes have been extended or the wrong specification oil has been used. Not every engine develops a fault, so we inspect and check service history rather than assuming the worst.
What about the 0.9 TCe three-cylinder?
The 0.9 TCe (H4Bt) is fitted to Clio, Captur and Sandero and uses a front-mounted timing chain. Tensioner and guide wear are the usual complaint, generally showing up as a rattle that's worse from cold.
Is the 1.5 dCi diesel chain or belt-driven?
The 1.5 dCi (K9K) is belt-driven, not chain-driven, despite sharing model badges with the chain-driven TCe petrol range. If your Clio, Captur, Kadjar or Duster is a dCi diesel, you need timing belt replacement on the correct interval rather than chain work — see our timing belt replacement page.
Can I keep driving with a rattling Renault or Dacia timing chain?
We wouldn't recommend it. A worn chain, tensioner or guide can jump timing or shed debris into the engine, and once that happens the repair moves from a chain job to much more serious damage. Getting a noise checked early is usually the difference between the two.
Do you work on Renault and Dacia chains across the whole range?
Yes. We see TCe chain work regularly across Clio, Captur, Kadjar, Megane, Duster and Sandero. Send us the registration and we'll confirm the exact engine code and drive type before discussing any repair.
