Subaru Timing Belt Replacement Manchester
Timing belt diagnosis and replacement for Subaru's belt-driven boxer engines, carried out at our Manchester workshop. We confirm your engine code first, then give you a clear price for exactly what your Subaru needs.
Subaru timing belt specialists in Manchester
Subaru's horizontally-opposed boxer engines are laid out differently to a conventional inline unit, which changes how the timing belt is routed and how many components sit in that belt run. We confirm the engine code from your registration before quoting, so we know whether we're looking at the older belt-driven EJ family or the newer chain-driven FB/FA engines.
Belt work on these engines sits within our wider timing belt replacement service. If you're not sure which engine your Subaru has, our page on timing belt vs timing chain explains how to check.
Subaru engines commonly fitted with a timing belt
- EJ20 (2.0 boxer petrol) — Fitted across many Impreza and Forester models. A timing belt engine with a horizontally-opposed layout, meaning several idler pulleys guide the belt around both cylinder banks.
- EJ25 (2.5 boxer petrol) — Used in Legacy, Forester and Impreza models of this generation. Same belt-and-idler layout as the EJ20, with the water pump driven by the same belt on many applications.
- FB / FA boxer (newer engines) — The boxer engines that replaced the EJ family in most current Subaru models use a timing chain rather than a belt. If this is your engine, see our timing chain guidance instead.
Why the boxer layout means more idler pulleys
On a conventional inline engine the timing belt runs a relatively short loop around a handful of pulleys. On Subaru's boxer engines the belt has to reach around both horizontally-opposed cylinder banks, which means additional idler pulleys guiding and tensioning the belt along the way. Each of those idlers carries load and wears over time, so a proper Subaru belt job renews the idlers alongside the belt rather than leaving worn ones behind a brand new belt.
Water pump renewal on the EJ family
On the EJ20 and EJ25, the water pump is commonly driven by the timing belt, sitting within the same belt run as the idlers. Because of that shared access, we'd generally recommend replacing the pump at the same time as the belt kit — see our page on water pump replacement for the reasoning behind doing this together.
Interference engines and belt failure
Many EJ20 and EJ25 engines are interference designs. If the belt slips a tooth or fails outright, the pistons and valves can meet, typically resulting in bent valves and sometimes further damage to the head. That risk is exactly why Subaru sets a belt replacement interval rather than leaving the belt to run indefinitely.
Newer Subaru engines use a timing chain
Subaru's FB and FA boxer engines, which have replaced the EJ family in most current models, are chain-driven. Chain wear on these engines presents as a rattle or timing fault code rather than a scheduled belt change — see timing chain replacement in Manchester if that's what your registration confirms.
Our process
- Engine code confirmation. We identify the exact engine and confirm it's belt-driven before quoting.
- Fixed quote. Belt kit, idler pulleys, tensioner and water pump where applicable — see our guide to timing belt replacement cost.
- Replacement. Belt, idlers, tensioner and water pump renewed as required for the boxer layout.
- Timing verification. Timing set and checked to Subaru's published procedure for that engine.
- Road test. Cooling system checked and a road test before handover.

Does my Subaru have a timing belt or a timing chain?
It depends on the engine family. The older EJ20 and EJ25 boxer engines used a timing belt, while Subaru's newer FB and FA boxer engines are chain-driven. Send us your registration and we'll confirm the engine code before quoting, since Impreza, Forester and Legacy models have been sold with both engine families.
How much does Subaru timing belt replacement cost?
It depends on the engine, access to the boxer layout, and how many idler pulleys and ancillary components the inspection shows are due alongside the belt and water pump. We confirm the engine code and give a fixed price before any work begins.
Why does the Subaru boxer engine have more idler pulleys?
The horizontally-opposed boxer layout routes the timing belt around both cylinder banks, which means more idler pulleys guiding the belt than on a conventional inline engine. Each idler is a wear item, and it's usual to renew them along with the belt rather than leave an old idler running behind a new belt.
Is the water pump replaced with a Subaru timing belt?
On the EJ20 and EJ25 engines, the water pump is driven by the timing belt and sits within the same belt run, so we would generally recommend renewing it at the same time as the belt and idlers. This avoids having to strip the same area down again in the near future for a pump that's already had the same duty cycle as the belt.
Are EJ20 and EJ25 Subaru engines interference engines?
Many are, so a belt that slips or fails can allow the pistons and valves to meet, causing bent valves and sometimes head damage. This is the reason for keeping to the manufacturer's belt interval rather than waiting for a symptom to appear.
Do newer Subaru engines still use a timing belt?
No — Subaru's FB and FA boxer engines, which replaced the EJ family in most models, are chain-driven rather than belt-driven. If your Subaru turns out to be an FB or FA engine, timing wear shows up differently, as a rattle or fault code rather than a scheduled interval — see our timing chain page for that side of the job.
Which Subaru models have the EJ20 or EJ25 belt engine?
The EJ20 and EJ25 boxer engines were fitted across many Impreza, Forester and Legacy models over a long production run. Confirm the exact engine code from your registration, as both belt-driven EJ engines and chain-driven FB/FA engines have been sold under these same model names.
