Timing Belt, Chain & Wet Belt Questions
Plain answers to the questions people ask us most. If your question is about your own car, send the registration and we'll check the exact engine.
What happens if a timing belt snaps while driving?
The engine stops straight away and will not restart, because the camshafts no longer turn with the crankshaft. On an interference engine — which many modern engines are — the pistons can strike open valves, bending them and sometimes damaging pistons or the head. Whether that happens depends on the engine design.
Read the answerCan you drive with a noisy timing chain?
It is not a good idea. A timing chain rattle usually means the chain has stretched or a tensioner or guide is wearing, and the engine may still run normally while that gets worse. If it jumps a tooth or breaks, an interference engine can suffer serious internal damage. Get it diagnosed promptly and keep journeys short until then.
Read the answerIs a wet belt worse than a dry timing belt?
Not worse by design, but less forgiving. A wet belt runs inside the engine in oil, which can make it quieter and more efficient, but when it degrades it sheds material into the oil. That debris can block the oil pick-up and cause low oil pressure, so a wet belt problem can damage the engine before the belt ever snaps.
Read the answerHow do I know if my cambelt has been changed?
Look for written proof: a service book stamp or invoice that names the timing belt and gives the date and mileage, or a cambelt change sticker under the bonnet. If there is no record, treat the belt as not done. A visual check can show the belt's condition, but it cannot prove when it was fitted.
