The 1.2 PureTech is the engine we work on most. Wet belt replacement, belt failure diagnosis, oil pick-up clean-up and low oil pressure repair — for every Stellantis brand that uses it.
This page covers the engine — pick your badge for model detail
The 1.2 PureTech is shared across several brands. This page explains the engine itself; the brand pages cover model-specific detail.
You want the engine explained regardless of badge — including DS, Vauxhall and Opel versions.

One engine, five badges
The 1.2 PureTech three-cylinder is used right across the Stellantis group. The badge on the bonnet changes, but on the belt-in-oil versions the timing belt design and the way it fails are broadly shared — which is why we diagnose by engine code, not by badge, and why the same sump debris and oil pressure faults turn up across all five brands.
How the PureTech wet belt fails
The belt sits in the oil and drives the camshafts, and on many versions the oil pump drive is part of the same oil-bathed system. As the belt's outer layer breaks down it releases rubber particles and fibres into the oil. Those particles migrate to the lowest point in the engine and build up on the oil pick-up strainer. Oil flow drops, pressure falls, and the engine's bearings and turbo start running on a marginal supply. Most PureTech engines we recover were killed by the debris, not by the belt breaking.
What we check on a PureTech
- Belt condition and tooth-root cracking, and whether the revised kit is already fitted
- Oil condition, level and any sign of black rubber sludge on the dipstick or filler
- Sump and pick-up strainer for accumulated belt material
- Actual oil pressure, not just the dash light
- Turbo shaft play and any bearing noise that suggests the damage is already done
- Stored fault codes for oil pressure, camshaft correlation and misfires

Oil pressure warnings on a wet belt engine are urgent. Here's why, and what we check first.

Which cars have the 1.2 PureTech wet belt?
The 1.2 PureTech (badged PureTech or Turbo) is fitted across Peugeot 208, 2008, 308, 3008, 5008, Rifter and Partner; Citroën C3, C3 Aircross, C4, C4 Cactus, C5 Aircross and Berlingo; DS 3 and DS 7; and Vauxhall/Opel Corsa, Crossland, Mokka, Astra and Combo. Most versions use a belt-in-oil design, but it varies by year and engine code — we confirm yours from the registration.
Why do PureTech wet belts fail so often?
The original belt compound degrades in hot engine oil, especially on cars doing short journeys or with extended oil services. The belt sheds rubber and fibres, which collect in the sump and block the oil pick-up, causing low oil pressure and eventually bearing damage.
What is the current PureTech wet belt interval?
Stellantis has revised the interval downwards more than once and introduced a revised belt. The correct interval depends on the exact engine code, build date and the manufacturer's current schedule, which has been revised more than once on several belt-in-oil engines — so we check it against your registration rather than quote one figure for every car.
Is the newer revised PureTech belt any better?
Yes — the revised kit uses a different belt construction and is noticeably more durable. We fit the latest specification kit, not old stock.
Can a PureTech engine be saved once the oil light has been on?
Sometimes. It depends how long it ran with low pressure. We inspect the sump, pick-up and oil condition and tell you honestly whether a belt and clean-up will do it or whether the engine has bearing damage.
