Does My Car Have A Timing Belt, Chain Or Wet Belt?
Check your make and engine below to see which timing system your car uses, then follow the link to the page for that make. We cover timing belts, timing chains and wet belts across most mainstream car and van makes in Manchester — send your registration and we will confirm the exact system and interval.
How we identify your timing system
The same model can have two different engines, and the same engine can be fitted across several brands. We use the registration to find the exact engine code and build date, then confirm:
- Whether the engine uses a belt, chain, or wet belt.
- The current manufacturer replacement interval or any revised service action.
- Whether the water pump, tensioner, or oil pump drive is part of the same job.
- The correct parts kit for the engine code.
This means the quote is for your car, not a generic average. Send your registration on the contact page or by WhatsApp.
Timing belts (dry cambelts)
Conventional timing belts are still the most common setup on petrol and diesel engines. We replace the belt, tensioners, idlers and water pump where required, set the timing to manufacturer spec and carry out a full road test. Full detail is on our timing belt replacement Manchester page.
Mainstream makes we cover for dry timing belts include:
- Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT & Škoda
- BMW & MINI
- Renault / Dacia
- Toyota
- Nissan
- Kia & Hyundai
- Fiat
- Volvo
Several of these have their own page — Toyota timing belt replacement and Honda timing belt replacement among them, with the full list of make pages further down this page. If your car is not listed, send your registration — we still cover it if it has a timing belt or chain.
Timing chains
Timing chains do not have a fixed replacement interval, but they do stretch and wear, especially on high-mileage or low-maintenance engines. Rattling on cold start, stretched timing, or chain slip are signs the chain, tensioners and guides need attention. Read more on our timing chain replacement Manchester page.
Common chain makes we work on include:
- BMW & MINI
- Volkswagen Group
- Mercedes
- Ford
- Vauxhall
- Nissan
- Peugeot / Citroën
- Other
Some chain engines have well-known failure patterns and have their own pages — BMW timing chain replacement for the N47, B47 and N20, Mercedes timing chain replacement for the OM651 and M271, and Audi and Volkswagen timing chain replacement for the EA888 and EA111.
Wet belts (belt-in-oil)
Wet belts are our specialism. The belt runs inside the engine, submerged in oil, and often drives the oil pump. As it degrades it sheds debris into the sump and blocks the oil pick-up, causing low oil pressure. Proper repair means the belt kit plus oil system clean-up and verified oil pressure. Start with the main wet belt replacement Manchester page.
The Stellantis 1.2 PureTech is the wet belt engine we see most, and we have dedicated pages for 1.2 PureTech, Peugeot 1.2 PureTech and Citroën 1.2 PureTech.
Where a wet belt has already started breaking down, the two pages worth reading are wet belt low oil pressure and wet belt oil pickup blockage, because that is the damage sequence we are trying to catch. If you are east of the city we also cover wet belt work in Bury.
Ford wet belt engines
Ford's 1.0 EcoBoost and 2.0 EcoBlue also use belt-in-oil designs, but Ford work is handled by our sister specialist, Manchester Ford Engine Specialist.

Which vehicles need a wet belt?
Wet belt (belt-in-oil) engines are used in the 1.2 PureTech petrol across Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Vauxhall and Opel, plus the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost and some Ford EcoBlue diesels. Send us your registration and we will confirm exactly which system your engine uses.
Do you only work on wet belt cars?
No. We cover conventional timing belts, timing chains, and wet belts. Our specialism is belt-in-oil engines, but we also replace cambelts and rattling timing chains across most mainstream makes.
Do you work on diesels?
Yes. Many diesel engines use timing belts or chains, and several Ford diesel models use a wet belt design. We quote and carry out the work based on the exact engine, not the badge.
Can you tell me which timing system my car has from the registration?
Usually yes. The registration gives us the engine code and build date, which lets us confirm whether it has a belt, chain, or wet belt and what the current manufacturer interval or revised specification is.
