Root cause
Wet Belt Oil Pickup Blockage in Manchester
This is the part of wet belt failure that actually kills engines. The belt sheds, the debris settles, the pick-up strainer blocks, and the oil pump can no longer draw what the engine needs.
How the blockage forms
The oil pump draws oil from the sump through a pipe with a mesh strainer on the end. That strainer exists to stop debris reaching the pump. When a wet belt breaks down it releases a steady supply of soft rubber and fibre into the oil, and every circulation deposits a little more of it on the mesh. The restriction builds slowly, which is why symptoms creep in rather than arriving all at once.
Why it is not a filter problem
The oil filter sits on the pressure side, after the pump. The pick-up strainer sits on the suction side, before it. Changing the filter does nothing for a blocked strainer — and a new filter can even give false reassurance while pressure keeps dropping. See wet belt low oil pressure for how that shows up on the dash.
How we deal with it properly
- Drain and examine the oil for rubber and fibre content
- Remove the sump and photograph what we find, so you can see it too
- Clean the sump thoroughly and clean or replace the pick-up strainer
- Check the oil pump and its drive for wear or debris ingestion
- Renew the timing belt (and oil pump drive where fitted) so the source of debris is gone
- Refill with the correct specification oil, fit a new filter and verify pressure
Doing the belt without the clean-up is a false economy
A new belt on a sump full of old belt is still a low oil pressure engine. If a quote looks cheap, check whether the oil system inspection is included. Ours is — see what our wet belt replacement covers.

What blocks the oil pick-up on a wet belt engine?
Rubber and fibre shed by the degrading timing belt. It circulates in the oil, settles in the sump and gradually coats the mesh strainer on the oil pick-up pipe.
Can an oil flush clear a blocked pick-up?
No. Flushing does not remove solid rubber sitting on a mesh screen, and it can dislodge debris into somewhere worse. The sump has to come off so the strainer can be inspected and cleaned or replaced.
Do you always remove the sump during a wet belt job?
We always inspect the oil and assess the likelihood of debris. Where there is evidence of belt breakdown we remove the sump, because fitting a new belt to a restricted oil system just repeats the failure.
How do I know if debris has already caused damage?
We measure real oil pressure, check turbo shaft play and listen for bearing noise. Those three together give a reliable picture before you commit to spending on a belt.
