Citroën 1.2 PureTech Wet Belt Replacement Manchester
The turbo 1.2 PureTech in the C3, C4, C5 Aircross and Berlingo runs its timing belt in engine oil. Here is exactly how it fails, and how we put it right.

Why the belt lives in the oil
Running the belt in oil lets the manufacturer package a compact three-cylinder engine and reduce friction losses. The trade-off is that belt life becomes dependent on oil condition and temperature. Short journeys, long service intervals and the wrong oil specification all shorten the belt's life significantly.
The Citroën PureTech failure pattern
The belt's outer layer breaks down and releases rubber and fibre into the oil. That material drifts to the sump and coats the oil pick-up strainer. Restricted flow means low oil pressure, and low pressure on a small turbo engine means turbo and bearing wear. In most cases the real damage is caused by the debris, not by a broken belt.
What we replace and check
- Latest revised PureTech belt kit, tensioner and idler hardware
- Oil pump drive belt and related seals where applicable
- Sump removal and pick-up strainer clean where debris is present
- Correct low-SAPS oil and filter, so the new belt gets a fair chance
- Measured oil pressure and road test before you collect the car

Oil pressure warnings on a wet belt engine are urgent. Here's why, and what we check first.

Shed belt material collects in the sump and blocks the oil pick-up strainer, starving the engine.

Does my Citroën 1.2 PureTech have a wet belt or a chain?
Most 1.2 PureTech engines from the last decade use a wet belt (belt-in-oil), but Stellantis has revised the engine family over time and versions differ — so '1.2 PureTech' on the badge doesn't settle it. Send us your registration and we will confirm the engine code and which drive you have.
How often should the Citroën PureTech wet belt be replaced?
Stellantis has shortened the published interval more than once, so older service schedules can understate it. The correct interval depends on the exact engine code, build date and the manufacturer's current schedule, which has been revised more than once on several belt-in-oil engines — so we check it against your registration rather than quote one figure for every car.
What are the first symptoms on a C3 or C4?
Usually an oil pressure light that flickers at idle when hot, a cold-start rattle, rough running, or black rubbery residue on the dipstick and filler cap.
Is it worth doing the belt on a high-mileage car?
Often yes, but only after an inspection. If the oil system already shows heavy debris and the engine has bearing noise, we will tell you straight rather than take money for a belt that won't save it.
