Peugeot 1.2 PureTech Wet Belt Replacement Manchester
The 1.2 PureTech turbo is the engine behind most Peugeot wet belt failures. We replace the belt to the latest revised specification and clean up the oil system while we are in there.

How the 1.2 PureTech belt is designed
On most turbocharged 1.2 PureTech versions, a toothed belt runs inside the engine, bathed in oil, to drive the camshafts. On many versions a related belt-in-oil drive turns the oil pump. Because the belt lives in hot oil, its life depends heavily on oil condition — which is why two identical Peugeots can be in completely different states at the same mileage.
The failure sequence we see
- The belt's outer layer softens and begins releasing rubber and fibre into the oil.
- Debris settles in the sump and coats the oil pick-up strainer.
- Oil pressure drops — usually noticed as a flickering light at idle when hot.
- Bearings, camshaft journals and the turbo start running on reduced oil supply.
- Either the belt strips its teeth or the engine suffers oil-starvation damage.
Catching it at stage one or two is a belt job. Stage four onwards is a different conversation — read more on wet belt low oil pressure and oil pick-up blockage.
What we do differently on a PureTech
- Latest revised belt kit only — no old-specification stock
- Oil pump drive belt renewed at the same time, not left to be someone else's problem
- Sump and pick-up inspected and cleaned where debris is present
- Correct low-SAPS oil specification, because the wrong oil shortens the next belt's life
- Oil pressure verified and a road test before handover

Which Peugeots use the 1.2 PureTech wet belt?
Most 1.2 PureTech engines fitted to the 208, 2008, 308, 3008, 5008, Rifter and Partner over the last decade use a belt-in-oil timing belt. Stellantis has revised the engine family over time and versions differ — so the badge and displacement alone don't confirm it. Send your registration and we'll check the engine code and build date.
When should the 1.2 PureTech belt be changed on a Peugeot?
Stellantis has reduced the interval more than once. The correct interval depends on the exact engine code, build date and the manufacturer's current schedule, which has been revised more than once on several belt-in-oil engines — so we check it against your registration rather than quote one figure for every car.
Is engine damage likely if the belt is left too long?
Yes. The belt sheds material into the oil, the pick-up blocks and oil pressure falls. Left long enough that means turbo and bearing wear, which is far more expensive than the belt.
Do you clean the sump and oil pick-up as part of the job?
We always inspect them. If there is belt debris in the sump we clean the sump and pick-up strainer, because fitting a new belt onto a blocked oil system just repeats the failure.
