Your question answered
What happens if a timing belt snaps while driving?
A straight answer from a Manchester timing belt, timing chain and wet belt specialist.
What does it feel like when a timing belt snaps?
Usually there is no long warning. The engine cuts out, the rev counter drops, and the starter may spin the engine noticeably faster than normal when you try to restart, because there is no compression. Power steering and brake assistance become heavier once the engine stops, so steer to a safe place and stop.
Do not keep trying to restart it. Each attempt turns the crankshaft while the valves are out of time, and on an interference engine that can add damage.
Interference vs non-interference engines — why does it matter?
In an interference engine the valves and pistons share the same space at different moments, and the timing belt is what keeps them apart. When the belt breaks, valves left open can be hit by a rising piston. The typical result is bent valves; worse cases involve damaged pistons, guides or the cylinder head.
In a non-interference engine there is clearance even when timing is lost, so a snapped belt usually means a new belt and a timing check rather than internal damage. You cannot tell which you have from the badge — it depends on the specific engine code, which is why we check from the registration.
What usually causes a timing belt to snap?
The common causes are age and mileage past the manufacturer's schedule for that engine, a seized or failing tensioner, idler or water pump bearing, and contamination from oil or coolant leaks softening the rubber. A belt that has been on far longer than intended can crack and lose teeth before it breaks.
Wet (belt-in-oil) timing belts tend to fail differently: they usually shed material into the oil rather than snapping cleanly, which causes oil pressure problems first.
What should I do if my belt has gone?
Have the car recovered rather than driven or towed on a rope over a long distance. Before anyone quotes for a new belt, the engine should be checked for internal damage — on an interference engine a leak-down or compression test shows whether the valves have been bent. Fitting a new belt to an engine with bent valves just wastes the cost of the belt.
If your belt has not failed but you do not know when it was last changed, the cheapest fix is to have it replaced on schedule for your engine. Send us the registration and we confirm whether it is a belt, a chain or a wet belt, and what the job involves.

Can a snapped timing belt damage the engine?
On an interference engine, yes — the pistons can hit open valves. On a non-interference engine damage is less likely. It depends on the specific engine code.
Should I try to restart the engine after the belt snaps?
No. Repeated restart attempts turn the engine while the valves are out of time and can add damage on an interference engine. Arrange recovery.
Is there any warning before a timing belt snaps?
Often not. Sometimes a worn tensioner or pulley makes a whine or rattle, or a leak contaminates the belt, but many belts fail without obvious warning, which is why replacement on schedule matters.
